Background of GUK:
Gram Unnayan Karma (GUK) was established in the year 1989 as a non-profit, non-political & non-governmental social welfare organization under the dynamic leadership of Khandaker Alamgir Hossain along with some dedicated social activists. In 1993 the organization obtained registration from the Department of Social Services, Bogra. Later on the organization obtained registration certificates from the NGO Affairs Bureau, Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA), Directorate of Family Planning, Directorate of Health, Joint Stock Company etc.  As a pro-poor & char friendly organization having its root links with the char dwellers GUK initially started the non-formal primary education program enrolling 30 dropped out boys & girls of the ultra poor & poor households by setting up a learning centre in the vulnerable area of Sariakandi upazila under Bogra district with the individual financial contribution as grants, subscriptions of members & with the financial & technical assistance of BRAC. At present the development activities of GUK including its microfinance program cover 24 districts under 5 divisions of Bangladesh. All functions & programs are running under the approved policies and guidelines of GUK. In this regard local community people, founder members, general members, executive committee members, consultants, advisors, dedicated staff members, Govt. and donor agencies are playing vital role to uphold the organizational position in country and abroad.


Vision: Empowered communities overcoming poverty through income generation and education in rural Bangladesh and to emerge as a nodal agency for socio-economic development of the poor in partnership with community, GO/NGOs, donors & private sectors.



Mission: Gram Unnayan Karma (GUK) upholds an august mission to address poverty issues for enhancing and sustaining the lives and livelihoods of the poor & disadvantaged group of people through interventions of different socio-economic development activities towards establishing a gender balanced society. The organization strives to accomplish this by implementing integrated projects/programs through participation of the community people in local level planning & implementation of demand driven development activities.


Goal: Empowerment of the poor communities through integrated family development approach.

 


Objective: The prime objective of GUK is to develop and enhance the existing socio-economic conditions of the targeted beneficiaries through utilization of their own resources and leveraging resources from outside along with financial and technical assistance. The specific objectives are.


Specific Objectives:
Provide integrated microfinance support among the ultra poor & poor community people for alleviation & employment creation.
Provide comprehensive health care support to the community people for total family health development.
Provide low cost eye care services among the poor community people through Pro Poor GUK Eye Hospital.
Provide solar power facilities to the households out of electricity grid through installation of Solar Home System.
Provide low cost quality education among the remote poor community children which will create ownership of the parents/guardians towards education resulting in the increase of literacy rate.
Increase awareness on small family norm by adapting family planning methods.
Provide skill development training agri inputs & machineries to the farmers for production of high value crops & safe vegetable.
Develop cross breed heifers/male calves for establishing mini dairy farms at community level, 
Provide adolescent reproductive health care & safe motherhood related services.
Enhance community resilience to climate change risks reduction through adaptation of appropriate interventions.
Increase mass awareness on prevention and control of HIV/AIDS and STDs.
Awareness raising on socio-economic & human resource development.
Mobilization of local resources & generation of savings by the ultra poor community people for their economic emancipation.
Provide skill development training, financial and technical support to the target people for undertaking income generating activities.
Financial support for micro & small enterprise development of the target groups.
Gender development to remove gender disparity & women empowerment.
Improve health condition and promote the nutritional status of the Poor.
Promote affordable environment friendly clean energy. 
Facilitate to enhance social peace and harmony.
Implement Relief and Rehabilitation works for disaster victims.
Encourage bottom up participatory planning with beneficiaries for effective implementation of project/program activities.
Extend legal aid support to protect women and children rights against violence & combat trafficking in women & children.
Ensure safe water and sanitation in rural poor communities.
Foster development of agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forestry.
Facilitate good governance at all levels.
Conduct research studies for undertaking sustainable & model activities.
